Ottawa, ON, December 4, 2024 – MiHR is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2024 I Chose Mining. Mining Chose Me. Scholarships: Catherine Condinho, undertaking a Bachelors of Science – Mining Engineering at Queen’s University, and Nur Erhalac, a Bachelor of Engineering, majoring in Mining Engineering Co-Op student at McGill University.

The scholarship program for post-secondary students in mining-related programs launched in 2021 in celebration of MiHR’s 25th anniversary. It is awarding a total of 10 $2,500 scholarships over five fiscal years.

“I am so grateful to MiHR for selecting me as this year’s scholarship recipient,” said Catherine Condinho. “My life has changed indefinitely for the better since pursuing a career in mining, and I am so appreciative of MiHR, as their generous support will allow me to pursue my ambitions in this industry.”

“I haven’t always been certain about which career path to pursue, but when I discovered the mining industry, I knew it was the right fit for me,” said Nur Erhalac. “Over the past four years of my undergraduate studies, my passion for this field has only deepened, especially through the hands-on experience I gained during my internships. As I approach the end of my studies, I am eager to step into the industry and contribute meaningfully to its growth and success while promoting health and safety in every aspect of my work.”

“On behalf of MiHR and the Scholarship Selection Committee, congratulations Catherine and Nur on your well-deserved scholarships,” said MiHR’s Executive Director Ryan Montpellier. “As both recipients stated in their applications, mining is a complex and dynamic industry that drives our way of life. Catherine and Nur represent the young talent needed to advance Canada’s mining industry as demand for minerals and metals rises due to their necessity in green technologies and for renewable energy.”
